Making Waves
Island life isn’t just for us humans, as one remarkable four-legged swimmer is proving. Meet Pepper, the beloved canine celebrity long-distance swimmer, whose love for the sea has captured hearts across the Channel Islands and beyond.
As a puppy, Pepper’s first swims were hesitant – just a few cautious paddles in the shallows. But one day, she found her rhythm and swam – really swam – for the first time, and from that moment on, there was no stopping her. For years, Pepper and her dad, Bob, made a daily ritual of lunchtime dips, while the rest of the family watched from the shore. But everything changed when Bob’s daughter, Indi, decided to join them. With her first dive into the open water, she felt the same thrill and freedom that had always captivated her dog, discovering firsthand the joy of sea swimming alongside her loyal companion. “At first, I hesitated,” Indi recalls. “I didn’t love the cold, but once I gave it a go, I was hooked. The freedom, the health benefits – it’s incredible.” What surprised her most, however, was how effortlessly Pepper moves in the water. “No matter how far we go or how long we swim, Pepper is always in the lead!”
Occasional dips quickly became a shared ritual, strengthening the relationship between all three of them. Inspired by this unique bond, Indi began documenting their daily swims on social media through her channel Diary of a Sea Swimmer. What started as a personal journal soon became a viral sensation, with thousands of followers tuning in to watch Pepper glide effortlessly through the water. One video alone surpassed one million views, a milestone Indi still finds hard to believe.
“No matter how far we go or how long we swim, Pepper is always in the lead!”
For Indi, Pepper’s journey is about more than just swimming. It’s about spreading joy and positivity. “There’s something special about sharing Pepper’s adventures. She brings smiles to so many, and in a world that can be tough at times, that’s a gift.” Pepper’s adventures are far from over. This swimming trio dive in all year round, but this summer, Indi, Bob, and Pepper have some exciting new swims and adventures planned — so keep an eye out on social media, because Pepper is just getting started.
