A Conversation with Julia Hands. From London law to the world of country house hospitality, Julia Hands reflects on the journey that shaped Hand Picked Hotels — and the belief that true luxury lies in warmth, care and thoughtful detail.
No-one embodies the spirit of Hand Picked Hotels quite like Julia Hands. As CEO and owner, she has overseen the careful growth of the collection into one of the UK and Channel Islands’ most distinctive portfolios of country house and coastal hotels. Each property is chosen not only for its beauty and heritage, but for its ability to offer guests a sense of warmth, comfort and belonging.
Julia’s path to hospitality was not a conventional one. Having begun her career as a London lawyer, she brought with her a keen eye for detail, a thoughtful approach to decision-making and a deep respect for the history of the buildings that now form the Hand Picked Hotels collection. Today the collection includes 21 remarkable properties, each with its own character yet united by a shared philosophy of genuine hospitality.
At the heart of that philosophy is a belief that true luxury lies not only in beautiful surroundings and supremely comfortable accommodation, but in the care and attention that make every guest feel personally welcomed.
A Journey into Hospitality
From Law to Luxury: A Conversation with Julia Hands
You began your career as a London lawyer before moving into hospitality. How has your legal background shaped the way you approach leadership and decision-making today?
Law encourages you to look closely at the detail, to identify and evaluate risks, and to think through the long-term implications of decisions before acting. That discipline still guides me today as we make important decisions for our collection of historic properties, each with its own opportunities and challenges.
At the same time, the hotel business is all about people. In legal practice, you could give the best advice, but clients must trust you before they act on it. Hospitality is similar: we need to understand and anticipate our guests’ needs so they feel confident they are in good hands. Ultimately both come down to creating trust.
What first drew you to the world of hospitality, and at what point did you realise it would become a long-term passion?
Shortly after we acquired the hotels, it became clear that the properties needed more personal attention for their individuality to truly shine than could be achieved using a third party manager. I felt that I could be the person to meet that need.
Becoming CEO of Hand Picked Hotels was certainly a leap into the unknown, but over time I discovered just how fulfilling hospitality can be. Creating places where people can relax, celebrate and enjoy time together is a privilege, and once I experienced that, it quickly became a long-term passion. It has also been a privilege to have played a part in the restoration and maintenance of the beautiful properties that comprise our collection.
Having worked in such a structured, high-pressure profession, what lessons from your legal career still influence how you operate within hospitality?
One of the most valuable lessons from my legal career was the importance of preparation and clarity. In law, success often depends on anticipating issues before they arise and approaching challenges methodically. Those habits translate well into hospitality, where thoughtful planning and consistency are essential to maintaining the quality of the guest experience across all our hotels.
Hand Picked Hotels has grown into a collection of 21 distinctive properties. What is most important to you when shaping experiences across the group?
What matters most is that every guest feels their stay has been both special and personal. When people travel, whether for leisure or business, they are investing their time and trust in the place they choose to stay. Our aim is to exceed their expectations by providing thoughtful service in beautiful surroundings, with all the details that create memorable experiences — from exceptional dining to restorative wellness — that they will want to return to.
Each Hand Picked Hotel has its own character. How do you balance individuality with a consistent standard of luxury and service?
The individuality of our hotels is one of the most important aspects of the collection. Many are historic country houses with fascinating stories and distinctive architecture, and we work very carefully to preserve that sense of place.
At the same time, guests should always feel confident that they will receive the same level of comfort, service and attention to detail wherever they stay with us. The balance lies in allowing each property’s character to shine while maintaining a shared commitment to quality.
What does ‘luxury’ mean to you personally, and how do you ensure it feels authentic across the portfolio?
To me, luxury is about comfort, authenticity and the sense that every detail has been carefully considered. It might be a beautifully restored building, a peaceful view across the countryside or a thoughtful gesture from a member of the team that makes a guest feel immediately at home. Ensuring that sense of authenticity across the collection comes from understanding the character of each hotel and allowing it to speak for itself.
Hospitality is ultimately about people — both guests and teams. What qualities do you value most in the people who bring Hand Picked Hotels to life?
We have an exceptional team at Hand Picked Hotels: people who are warm, professional and take great pride in what they do.
The atmosphere guests feel during their stay is shaped enormously by the enthusiasm and dedication of the teams who welcome and look after them. To support this, we work hard to create a positive environment where our people feel valued and able to develop in their careers with us.
As the owner, how closely do you remain involved with the hotels, and what aspects of the business matter most to you day to day?
I like to stay closely connected with the hotels and the people who run them, and I visit the properties as often as I can. Day-to-day, what matters to me most is that our hotels continue to evolve with the needs of our guests, while still remaining true to the standards and values that define the collection.
Looking ahead, how do you see Hand Picked Hotels evolving, while staying true to the values that define the brand?
We have some exciting plans ahead that will continue to enhance the experience for our guests. Over the coming years, our focus is on developing the unique offering of each hotel, whether that means restoring architectural features, enhancing guest facilities, including our wellness experiences, or evolving our dining experiences and celebrating the calibre and creativity of our chefs.
At the same time, we remain deeply committed to preserving the heritage and character of these buildings so they can be enjoyed by future generations.
Finally, what has surprised you most about your journey from law to luxury — and what continues to inspire you within hospitality today?
What has surprised me most is just how rewarding it is to create places that bring people joy. Hospitality allows you to play a small part in many different moments in people’s lives, from weddings and celebrations to quiet weekends away. Being able to create those moments, while also caring for these beautiful historic properties, continues to inspire me every day.
For Julia Hands, hospitality is not simply a business — it is the art of making people feel truly welcome.
