Luna, the American Staffy, loves to fill us in on her canine escapades. This time, she learns about the joys of holidaying, experiencing a warm welcome for all the family and indulging in her favourite pastime – walkies!
You might think that all we dogs do all day is sleep and run around in fields, but it’s not true. Although we do enjoy a little downtime, a canine’s life is all go; ‘fetch this’, ‘fetch that’, ‘sit’, ‘turn around’… this human entertainment business is a tough gig. Then, there’s the walking: LOTS of walking, and although I love walkies, it isn’t much fun when I’m stuck on my lead. It’s the best feeling when Mum asks me to stop, and she leans down and I hear that click of the lead leaving my neck –and then I am freeeeee! The more fields, the better, and I love making new dog buddies. You just can’t beat walkies!
Then there are the ‘holidays’, which are a bit of a new concept for me. I know humans ‘go on holiday’ a lot, often leaving us in strange places with an aunty or uncle to look after us. They always seem happier when they come back, and boy, am I happy to see them again! Back to jumping on the sofa when they are at work and getting spoiled rotten because, for some reason, they feel guilty for doing this ‘holiday thing’ without me. But this time was different – Mum seemed really excited because the ‘hotel’ we were staying in was ‘dog – friendly’, and that meant I could come on holiday too – and I liked the sound of that a lot! I had a bath and was fully groomed, and then I was put in the car, too, with my best rug packed in the boot!
We drove for miles without stopping for my usual run and I was very confused, but boy, that fresh air from the window smelt amazing. We finally stopped at a huge house, the biggest house I have ever seen in my life, with fields and lakes all around it. I saw other dogs popping out everywhere, barking and running around like no tomorrow. When Mum finally let me out of the car, we were greeted by lots of smiling faces, and the attention was so cool! I had so many cuddles and even treats – I loved this big house and all the family in it! I was a little worried when I saw a man walking off with my bag and all my toys, but Mum just smiled and told me not to worry.
Then, the best moment ever arrived… Mum led me out behind the house and took off my lead – I ran and ran and ran through fields and meadows like I had never ever seen! We walked for hours and hours, and I met so many buddies on the way – everyone was the happiest ever!

I was so tired and glad to get to our bedroom in this enormous new house, and overjoyed to find all my favourite toys and treats waiting for me. Well, if this is what humans call holidays, I can’t wait to see where we go next. As long as they don’t ask me to do too much fetching, I am in heaven in these big houses called hotels, especially because they love dogs like me so much.
