Oil Up

A growing number of us are realising the myriad of benefits essential oils deliver, from reducing stress and alleviating skin irritations, to improving wellbeing and boosting energy levels. Christina Mcgrogan, Assistant Spa Manager at Norton House Hotel, talks us through her top three essential oils.

Rose

Rich, sweet, floral and earthy Rose oil is known as the aroma of love, possibly because it is purported to boost libido. Containing several vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, it boasts soothing and moisturising properties but can also help to ease anxiety, improve mood and alleviate depression. It blends well with other oils to make perfume and can help soothe a dry, flaking scalp.

Top tip: Alleviate menstrual or menopausal cramps by inhaling Rose oil, or mix it with a carrier oil and apply to the skin.

Lavender

With its floral, fresh and herby aroma, lavender oil is naturally antibacterial, which can help to reduce acne inflammation and soothe irritated skin. It also boasts relaxing and sedative properties to aid sleep and reduce anxiety.

Top tip: Combine with hazel for use as a skin toner or add to Coconut oil or Almond oil to use as a moisturiser.

Bergamot

Thanks to its fresh, sweet, and citrusy notes, Bergamot oil is heralded for regulating mood by triggering the release of feel-good chemicals dopamine and serotonin. It’s effective in preventing minor skin infections, and its antiseptic and antibacterial properties also make it a good skin cleanser.

Top tip: Ease digestive discomfort by adding a few drops of Bergamot oil into almond oil or jojoba oil and massage into the stomach.
