Bootcamp Boost
If outdoor exercise is your favourite way to train but motivation is a stumbling block, a fitness Bootcamp might be the ultimate solution. We spoke to Ian Potter, Hand Picked Hotels’ Channel Islands Head of Fitness, about introducing Bootcamp training to members and the positive results it delivers.
Originating from military training, where soldiers are required to be in peak physical and mental condition, the concept of ‘Bootcamp’ has become embedded within the health and fitness industry. It attracts people from all walks of life, from celebrities like Kim Kardashian and the Beckhams to those looking for a more strategic fitness approach. The reason that it is so popular is because it works so well in delivering results. A few key components, namely, discipline, structure, progression and hard work, all help to keep the results coming.
The recent introduction of Bootcamps at St Pierre Park Health Club and Spa has provided members and guests with an opportunity to rapidly improve their health and fitness. While this is a new service within Hand Picked Hotels, it is not new to our CI Head of Fitness, Ian Potter. Ian introduced Bootcamp into Guernsey in 2005 and has a wealth of experience delivering these highly effective training sessions.
Ian explains, “I am a huge ambassador of Bootcamps, as I have witnessed so many people consistently improve their health and fitness within a relatively short period of time.” He continues, “I typically run them in four-week blocks and straight away, that means there is a commitment to train regularly.”

All of Ian’s sessions are outdoors, exposing the group to nature, which is becoming a bit of a commodity in modern life. Training in the dark, wet and freezing conditions of an early January morning adds another challenge to a session, but Ian is keen to point out that it builds resilience and mental toughness – and it gets easier. “When we hit the warmer summer conditions, we could be training on the beach right next to the crystal clear water,” says Ian. “It’s a great way to start any day.”
In terms of the training itself, there is a real focus on individual progress, and each and everyone is encouraged to push outside of their comfort zone but in a safe and effective way. Working out alongside others means there is also a constant support, so when you feel you can’t do something, there is plenty of encouragement to show you that actually, you can. As Ian explains, “If you want to get in your best ever shape, then in my experience, this is a great way to do so.”
